Stage 11: Ulan Bator to Beijing

Olympic spirit

After some excursions to the most beautiful sights of Mongolia, the stage approaches the capital of the "billion people nation" via further highlights such as the Yungang Caves (a World Heritage Site) and the Great Wall of China. As guests at an event to celebrate the Olympic Games, participants will witness this global sporting event in Beijing.

A summary of the stage

The Ulan Bator - Beijing stage

Day 1

Individual arrival in Ulan Bator, overnight in hotel in Ulan Bator

Day 2

Breakfast together in the hotel, get the vehicles and receive brief instructions on handling the Toyota Land Cruiser; visit the Buddhist monastery of Gandan and explore the city of Ulan Bator, optional visit to the natural history museum with an exhibition of dinosaur finds in Mongolia, dinner together in the city

Day 3

Breakfast in the hotel, load the vehicles and look at the route for the day; we leave Ulan Bator westwards on what are the last few kilometres of metalled road, have a picnic en route; we then take gravel tracks through wild country to Ogii Nuur lake, overnight in a ger camp near Ogii Nuur lake

Day 4

Breakfast in ger camp, travel to Karakorum and visit the ruins of the former capital of the Mongolian empire: Karakorum is considered one of Mongolia's primary attractions and was founded by Genghis Khan in 1220. In 1990, the city ruins were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Continue to the monastery of Tövkhön Süm and to Khuislin Naiman Nuur Nature Reserve and the Orchon waterfall, dinner together and camping overnight

Day 5

Stage for the day: Khuislin Naiman Nuur National Park – Gobi Desert (270 km), travel along the foothills of the Gobi Desert and camp overnight by the Gobi Desert

Day 6

Stage for the day: Gobi Desert – Dalandzagad (420 km), visit Vulture Gorge, dinner together and overnight in hotel in Dalandzagad

Day 7

Stage for the day: Dalandzagad – Mandakh (380 km), travel through the Eastern regions of the Gobi Desert and camp overnight near Mandakh

Day 8

Breakfast together, travel through the sand dunes and through the extreme southern tip of the Gobi Desert; travel north in the late afternoon, camp overnight and dinner together in the South Gobi Desert

Day 9

Breakfast together in the camp, we then travel along the Moltsog Els sand dunes from the South Gobi aimak to Dundgobi aimak, picnic lunch, continuing north through the Mongolian steppes along breathtaking rock formations; the landscape becomes increasingly green and we camp and eat out under the stars

Day 10

Breakfast together in the camp, travel continues towards Ulan Bator, picnic lunch, past the oldest nature reserve in the world, the Chentij Mountains, and then over almost endless gravel tracks onto the last few kilometres of metalled road into Ulan Bator, check into hotel in Ulan Bator late evening and dinner together

Day 11

Breakfast in the hotel, unload vehicles and free time, dinner together in the city of Ulan Bator

Day 12

Transfer to the airport and flight from Ulan Bator to Beijing, arrival in Beijing at midday and transfer to hotel; check into hotel, and first tour of the streets of Beijing together, dinner together in the streets of the Old City

Day 13

Breakfast in the hotel, visit to the Emperor's Palace and Tiananmen Square in the centre of Beijing; after lunch, we will visit the most important temple precinct still in existence, the Temple of Heaven, dinner together in the centre of Beijing

Day 14

Breakfast in hotel, travel towards Badaling and visit the Great Wall of China at Badaling, return to Beijing late afternoon, final evening together in the Champions Club with live transmission from the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games, dinner together and overnight in hotel

Day 15

Transfer to airport, flight back to Germany, arriving in Germany towards evening
