From Java to Sumatra

Towering volcanoes and the wide Indian Ocean; a fantastic natural backdrop for this stage. It links some of the most beautiful destinations on the principal Indonesian islands and also leaves time for exotic activities such as riding elephants or snorkelling in the crystal-clear Java Sea.

A summary of the stage

The Jakarta-Medan stage

Day 1

Individual arrival in Jakarta, organizational matters/vehicle instruction, sightseeing in Jakarta including Pasar Burung bird market, dinner together and overnight in hotel in Jakarta

Day 2

Morning and afternoon free, optional tour of the islands by speedboat from Jakarta with various activities (golf, snorkelling, diving, relaxing)*, dinner together and overnight in a hotel in Jakarta

Day 3

Stage for the day: Jakarta – Way Kambas National Park (270 km), ferry crossing from Java to Sumatra, visit Way Kambas National Park, optional elephant ride at Kandangsaru Elephant Training Center*, camp overnight

Day 4

Stage for the day: Way Kambas National Park – Badingagung (290 km), camp overnight at Lake Ranau

Day 5

Stage for the day: Badingagung – Bengkulu (340 km), travel to Kaba volcano, visit the English fort "Benteng Marlborough", dinner together and overnight in a hotel

Day 6

Stage for the day: Bengkulu – Kerinci Seblat National Park (350 km), travel along the South-West coast of Sumatra, visit Kerinci Seblat National Park, camp overnight in the National Park

Day 7

Stage for the day: Kerinci Seblat National Park – Padang (280 km), travel to Kerinci volcano (3,800 m; highest mountain in Indonesia), sightseeing in Padang, dinner together and overnight in hotel in Padang

Day 8

Stage for the day: Padang – Haura Canyon/Bukittinggi (150 km), drive the hairpin bends through the terraced rice fields towards Bukittinggi, visit the Minankabau houses near Batu Sangkar, Harau Canyon, camp overnight near Bukittinggi

Day 9

Stage for the day: Haura Canyon/Bukittinggi – Sipirock (320 km), cross the equator in Bonjol, Trans Sumatra Highway, camp overnight near Sipirock

Day 10

Stage for the day: Sipirock – Tuk Tuk (island of Samosir in Lake Toba) (230 km), sightseeing on Tuk Tuk, camp overnight on the island of Samosir

Day 11

Stage for the day: Tuk Tuk – Bukit Lawang (230 km), Sipisopiso waterfall with its view onto Lake Toba, visit a 200 year-old royal village near Pematang, fascinating rainforest at the foot of Sibayak volcano which is still active, camp overnight near Bukit Lawang

Day 12

Stage for the day: Bukit Lawang – Medan (110 km), visit the Orang Utan village of Bukit Lawang, dinner together and overnight in hotel in Medan

Day 13

Sightseeing in Medan, including the Mesjid Raya Mosque and Jl Soekarno Hatta, visit a crocodile farm, dinner together, overnight in hotel in Medan
